Down by the harbour there is a mackerel fishing boat that
sets off three times a day during the holiday but now the season is coming to a
close, it sets off just once a day. Today was a great day to pick because it was one of
the clearest hottest days of the summer.
The trip costs £8 per person and is an hour and a half trip,
they provide everything you need and you can pretty much keep what you catch so
it is a great deal. We were not expecting to catch many but we wanted to give
it a go anyway.
There were 14 other people waiting to go on the trip, so we got divided
up into two boats. once we had set sail we made a short trip just out of the harbour side and then
were shown how to use our lines and began. It was only a couple of minutes
before the couple next to us reeled in the line and had caught there first
mackerel, we were not sure if we had a bite but we had a look anyway and surprisingly
we had caught one too. The fisherman
then came along snapped its head back to break its neck, threw it in a bucket and then we
tossed the hook back in the water to try again.
Over the course of an hour and a half we were catching quite
a few fish, at the beginning we were keeping everyone we caught but after we
had a couple the fisherman told us to just grab the hook and shake them free if
they were small ones so it became more of a challenge to catch decent sized
ones that were big enough to keep. Towards the end I did manage to catch quite
a big one, the biggest one of the day so when that went in the bucket I made
sure everyone knew that was going to be my dinner for the day.
At the end of the trip he got us all a bag and handed out
the fish evenly (making sure I had the big one I caught) and we went away
feeling proud as we had 14 decent sized mackerel we had caught.
